how change newsgroups name windows mail

I am using Windows Mail on Vista 5384. I have Microsoft NNTP access configured on this client and now I want a way to shorten the newsgroup names.
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail
are similar until the last word and the width of the folders pane isnt wide enough to accomodate this without scrolling about left and this is annoying.
Can I shorten the names of the newsgroups to just "vista.general" or "vista.mail" or whatever?
I know Thunderbird can form 'acronyms' from the long newsgroup names like m.p.w.v.general etc

Short answer: not at this time. It's been asked for for many years, both in Outlook Express and now in Vista Windows Mail and WLMD beta. Whether it will ever be possible is not known.
